Unemployment is an undesirable factor for any government in power. A government is considered to be successful when it has controlled a number of factors including lowering down the unemployment rate of the country. Unemployment refers to a situation in which a person is actively searching for a job to fulfil his financial needs but is unable to find one. Employment rate is the measure to have an idea about the number of people who are unemployed. In Canada, young graduates are finding it difficult to find a proper job which is relevant to their field and pays a handsome amount as well. The unemployment rate has been on an increasing trend in most of the countries considered to be developed. However, engineering is one of a kind field, in which graduates can get hired right after their education. It is considered to be one of the best degrees not only in Canada but worldwide. However, in the recent times it is seen that engineering graduates are taking a while in finding the right job for them in Canada. Even in the case of experienced engineering, it is found out that jobs which are specific to engineering are seemingly becoming tough to secure. According to a research group named as Statistics Canada, it is found out that 2 out of 3 engineers are working at a different job than traditional engineering. The study was based in Ontario, which has one the largest engineering base in Canada. Engineers tend to work with consultancy providing firms and industrial engineering departments. Traditional engineering jobs are seemingly on a declining trend.
Factors affecting Employment of Engineers
An evident reason for this change is the increasing complexity of the nature of the Canadian economy. Engineers have more jobs available in the technical areas of non-engineering sectors than they have in the engineering sectors. According to Paul Acchione, President and Chairperson of Ontario Society of Professional Engineers, Canadian economy has taken dramatic changes in the recent times particularly for engineers. The research report of Underemployment Working Group shows that the industry is lacking behind in job creation for fresh graduates and trained engineers. The gap between supply and demand of engineers is seen to be on an increasing trend. On the other hand, the engineers who are already employed are not being trained in the fashion that used to be in the past. Increase in competition has compelled the employers to demand engineers who are suitable for the specific jobs offered by employers. Engineering associations are working for the improvement of the situation through research and finding the real cause of this gap between supply and demand.
Challenges for Future
The field of engineering has unique characteristics as it has the ability to regain its status faster than the other fields. According to Engineering Labour Market Conditions Final Report 2013, the first challenge is to make the transition of graduation to work as effective as possible. It also involves increasing the number of internships and pre graduation experience. The second challenge is to understand the needs of the industry and introduce new programs such as a mix of business education and engineering. Third challenge is to increase awareness among the experienced engineers about the growing fields of engineering so that they can move from declining sectors into growing sectors of engineering.
